We’ll be exploring the making of the upcoming film God, Guts, and Grit: The Legacy of Nina Paul Shumway, a moving documentary that captures the heart and history of our area. To catch a glimpse of this remarkable project, you can watch the trailer here: God, Guts, and Grit Trailer. (Please scroll down that page a bit to view the trailer video).

The story of Nina Paul Shumway, one of our area’s first preservationists and last homesteaders, is one of grit, resilience, and a love for the land. Through her beautiful poetry and vivid writings, Nina brings to life the untold struggles and triumphs of those who came before us, laying the foundation for the community we cherish today.

The film is being brought to life by Pamela Peak, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker whose work has touched millions on PBS. At this event, Pamela will share her inspiring process of crafting documentaries that not only educate but deeply move audiences. She’ll also conduct live interviews with some of the region’s most knowledgeable historians, offering a glimpse into the rich history captured in the film.

We are also delighted to present the incredible Cahuilla Music of Steve Rushingwind.

Rushingwind’s enchanting flute music is Native American and also New Age. He is an International Two Time Native American Music Award (NAMMY) winner. His works have been featured on PBS with Ken Burns. He will grace the stage for this event at 3:40 PM on January 26th.

Meet Kitty Kaufman, the great-granddaughter of Nellie Coffman, pioneer and early business woman of the Coachella Valley.

Meet Tina Wilson, the beautiful voice of Nina Paul Shumway in God, Guts, and Grit: The Legacy of Nina Paul Shumway.

RSVP by contacting Cynthia at Coachella Valley History Museum at cynthia@cvhm.org or 760-342-6651.

This is more than an event; it’s a celebration of our shared heritage, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
